What is the difference between a web app and a mobile app?

The main difference between the two is that web apps run on and are accessible by a browser. They are also very adaptable to any device. Web apps do not need to be downloaded or installed, but they often require an internet connection to function. Mobile apps are built for a specific device such as smartphones or a tablet and for operating systems like IOS or Android. Web apps are accessed via an internet browser (like Chrome or Firefox) and will adapt to whichever device they’re being viewed on. Web apps feel much closer to traditional websites but with added functionality and features. 

What are the advantages of a web app compared to a mobile app?

Web apps have these advantages:
  • They function in-browser on all devices and therefore do not need to be downloaded or installed
  • They can be set up to update themselves automatically as needed
  • They are more manageable and faster to build than mobile apps
  • App store approval is not required, so web app developments get launched faster
Yet there are some web app disadvantages also:
  • Limited feature set when compared to mobile
  • Regular updates needed to stabilise the running of web apps without issues
  • No offline availability, and need to be online to work
  • No access to the app stores and the huge user base, making them harder to find.

Progressive web apps have more functionality than you would typically find in a mobile app while still having the benefits that a web app brings. Due to advancements in modern browsers, websites can now store much more data, meaning a PWA can now work without an internet connection and load very quickly. Other typical mobile app functionalities that you can now get with a PWA include push notifications, native video/video playback and audio capture while still not needing to be download.
